The Easter Egg!, 1878. Artist: Joseph Swain
The Easter Egg!, 1878. The Russian Eagle crouches protectively over its egg, the Treaty of San Stefano. This was the treaty signed to formalise the terms of the peace between Turkey and Russia. However, the peace was tenuous at best, with Britain objecting to any terms that altered or affected the Treaty of Paris that had ended the Crimean War in 1856, and the terms of which were renewed in 1871. A Congress had been proposed by Bismarck in order to try and reach agreement, but that provoked disputes about which countries should be invited to attend. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 27, 1878.
