'The Rivals', 1881. Artist: Joseph Swain
'The Rivals', 1881. The Liberal Prime Minister, Gladstone, outdoes his rival for the affection of Hibernia by presenting her with flowers wrapped in his Land Reform Bill. Behind Hibernia, an Irish dissident Land Leaguer carried his cache of dynamite and gunpowder. Mr Gladstone was winning his battle to push through his Irish Land Reform Bill. It had had three readings in the Commons before being passed to the Lords. It had been subject to much modification and amendment in the Lords. Gladstone was able to agree some but hotly resisted others. The matter had some way to go. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 13, 1881.
