Sir Nicholas Bacon, English politician, (1826). A staunch Protestant, Bacon (1509-1579) fell out of favour during the reign of Mary I. Under Elizabeth I he was created Lord Keeper of the Great Seal (1558). He was the father of Francis Bacon, the philosopher, scientist and statesman.
