Percy's (1564-1632) estates of Petworth House and Syon House were acquired on his marriage to Dorothy Devereux, the sister of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, in 1594. Percy spent 16 years as a prisoner in the Tower of London where he smoked tobacco with Walter Raleigh.
