Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, English military commander, (1832). Cornwallis (1738-1805), served as Governor General of Bengal from 1786 to 1793 and again from July to October 1805. During the American Revolution he accepted command as Major General. In 1781 Washington moved against Cornwallis in Yorktown, Virginia, forcing Cornwallis to surrender. This defeat was decisive in ending the American Revolution.
