'Exterior View of the Ancient Wall of Alexandria, with Cleopatra's Needle', 1802. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. Cleopatra's Needle is one of a pair of Ancient Egyptian obelisks dating from c1500 BC. It was transported from Egypt to London in 1878 at the expense of Sir William James Erasmus Wilson, and erected on the Thames Embankment London. The other was taken to New York and erected in Central Park in 1881. A plate from Views in Egypt.
