Pierre Eugene Marcellin Berthelot French organic chemist and politician, c1885. Berthelot (1827-1907) worked on explosives and dyes, and proved that hydrocarbons and other organic compounds can be synthesised from inorganic materials. He was one of the founders of thermochemistry. He served as French Foreign Minister from 1895-1896.
