In the smithy attached to the cottage blacksmiths are busy at the forge while, outside, two horses wait to be shod. The ferry with a horse and donkey on board is waiting. On the bank a mounted man chats to a woman and child. The painting is probably a scene on the river Thames, one of the artist's favourite subjects.
