Hereward the Wake, Anglo-Saxon rebel, attacking Peterborough Abbey, 1070 (early 20th century). Hereward attacking the abbey in protest at William I's imposition of a Norman abbot. From his base in the fens near Ely, Hereward was a leader of popular Anglo-Saxon resistance after the Norman Conquest and the coronation of William the Conqueror as King of England. He was the eponymous hero of a novel by Charles Kingsley published in 1865.
