Mehemet 'Ali (c1769-1849), mid-19th century. Mehemet 'Ali (Mohammed 'Ali), an Albanian officer, was sent to Egypt with a Turkish/Albanian force when the French invaded in 1798. He led his Albanians in support of the Egyptians against the Mamelukes. Proclaimed viceroy of Egypt, 1805. Instigated the massacre of the Mamelukes in Cairo, 1811. In 1848 he became insane and was succeeded by his adopted son, Ibrahim Pasha.
