William J Hardee, American soldier. Hardee (1817-1873) was a Major-General in the Confederate army in the American Civil War (1861-1865). He commanded a corps at the Battle of Shiloh (1862), and fought in the Atlanta campaign (1864) and resisted William T Sherman's march through Georgia and South Carolina. After the war he settled down on an Alabama plantation.
