Leonidas Polk, American cleric and soldier. Polk (1806-1864) was appointed Bishop of Arkansas in 1838, and of Louisiana in 1841. He commanded a corps of Confederate troops during the American Civil War (1861-1865), earning the nickname 'the Fighting Bishop'. Polk was killed by a Union artillery shell at Pine Mountain, Tennessee on 14 June 1864.
