The River Trent frozen at Mill Bridge, Newark, Nottinghamshire, 1895.
The River Trent frozen at Mill Bridge, Newark, Nottinghamshire, 1895. The last freeze of the Trent occurred in January 1895. For 10 days the river was frozen and safe for skaters, and a hockey match was held between Newark and Burton-on-Trent, near to Averham Weirs. Here men are putting on ice skates, and although these local inhabitants, photographed under Mill Bridge at the end of Mill Lane, appear perfectly at ease, several fatalities due to thin ice were reported in the area.
