The Exchange, looking east, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, 1845. Artist: Newman & Co
The Exchange, looking east, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, 1845. This was Nottingham's 'great Market Place' where, from medieval times right through the 1920s a Saturday market was held, as well as the October 'Goose Fair' which, in the 19th century, became a fun fair. Street names like The Poultry, Cheapside and Beastmarket Hill recall the use of the area as a market. This view was taken from Beastmarket Hill. In the 1920s the Exchange was demolished and replaced with a new building, the Council House.
