'Le Plan Trochu', 1870-1871. Artist: Anon
'Le Plan Trochu', 1870-1871. A kneeling General Jules Trochu, who served as President of France from September 1870 to January 1871, offers the keys of Paris to Wilhelm I of Prussia. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. Under the command of Trochu, the city held out despite famine and great hardship until 28 January 1871, by which time capitulation had become inevitable. Cartoon from Actualites. From a private collection.
