Lord Nelson at Merton House in early September 1805, (19th century). One of Britain's greatest military figures, Admiral Nelson (1758-1805) was the victor at a number of naval battles in the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of the Nile (1798), Copenhagen (1801) and most famously, Trafalgar (October 1805) where he was fatally wounded. This portrait dates from the month before he was killed.
