'Sholes' Type Writer', 1872. A woman using a typewriter by the American inventor Christopher Latham Sholes (1819-1890). A forerunner of the 20th century machine, the keys had a piano action and the carriage moved one space to the left for each character struck The keyboard had a Qwerty layout.
