John Lubbock, first Baron Avebury, English banker, archaeologist, naturalist and politician, 1882. Lubbock's (1834-1913) Prehistoric Times, first published in 1865, was one of the most influential archaeological books of the 19th century. In it he coined the terms Palaeolithic and Neolithic for the first time. He also carried out research into the behaviour of ants and other insects.
