Monument of Juan Sebastian Elcano, Maria Luisa Park, Seville, Andalusia, Spain, 2007. Artist: Samuel Magal
Monument of Juan Sebastian Elcano, Maria Luisa Park, Seville, Andalusia, Spain, 2007. Elcano was a Spanish Basque explorer who completed the first circumnavigation of the world on the expedition commanded by Ferdinand Magellan that left Spain in 1519, returning home in 1522 (Magellan was killed by natives in the Philippines in 1521). The monument stands in front of the building known as the Sewing Box of the Queen (Costurero de la Reina). Built in the late 19th century it was actually a pavilion in the garden of the San Telmo Palace. Mercedes of Orleans, Queen of Alfonso XII of Spain, used to like to go there to sew and enjoy the air by the river.
