The Prytaneion at Kassope, Greece. Artist: Samuel Magal
The Prytaneion at Kassope, Greece. A Prytaneion was a seat of the Prytaneis (executive), and so the seat of government in ancient Greece. The term is used to describe any of a range of ancient structures where officials met (normally relating to the government of a city). It normally stood in the centre of the city, in the agora. Kassope is one of the best preserved ancient Greek cities. It was the chief settlement of the Kassopaii, a Thesprotian tribe that broke away from the rest of the Thesprotians around 400 BC and formed an independent state.
