Syracuse
Detail of the facade of an old museum palazzo in Ortigia, Syracuse, Sicily, pictured on September 13, 2009, in the afternoon. The 2,700 year old Syracuse is a province and a city in southern Italy on the Island of Sicily. The island Ortigia is the historic centre of Syracuse. Today the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by Ancient Greek Corinthians and allied with Sparta and Corinth, it was a very powerful city-state and one of the major powers of the Mediterranean. In the 17th century it was heavily destroyed by an earthquake. Many buildings date back to the 19th century when it regained importance. Picture by Manuel Cohen.
