Qasr Azraq, Jordan
Wall of Qasr Azraq and entrance gatehouse where T E Lawrence was based in 1917-18 during the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans, Qasr Amraq, Jordan. This desert castle is situated at Azraq oasis, the only water source in this desert area. It was originally inhabited by the Nabateans and Romans but the castle was largely built by the Ayyubids in the 13th century. It is built from local basalt in a square format with a central courtyard and towers on each corner. Lawrence of Arabia, 1888-1935, British Army officer and writer, made his headquarters here and wrote about his experience in his book Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Picture by Manuel Cohen
