The Qafe, Gjirokastra, Albania
The Qafe or Neck of the Bazaar, a busy intersection of 5 streets that forms the heart of the old town of Gjirokastra, Southern Albania, with the Kalaja e Gjirokastres or Gjirokastra Castle above. Most of the Ottoman houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Gjirokastra was settled by the Greek Chaonians, the Romans and Byzantines before becoming an Ottoman city in 1417. Its old town was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Picture by Manuel Cohen
