Sacred well, Forum, Butrint, Chaonia, Albania
Sacred well, Hellenistic and Roman, near the Theatre in the Roman Forum, built after
Julius Caesar's designation of Butrint as a Roman colony in 1st century BC, Butrint, Chaonia, Albania. The Forum is a monumental open space used for public life, business and worship. It had 3 shrines to the North, is surrounded by porticoes and has a stone pavement. It was discovered by archaeologists in 2005. Butrint was founded by the Greek Chaonian tribe and was a port throughout Hellenistic and Roman times, when it was known as Buthrotum. It was ruled by the Byzantines and the Venetians and finally abandoned in the Middle Ages. The ruins at Butrint were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Picture by Manuel Cohen
