The Cathedral of Evora, Portugal, 2009. Construction of the Romanesque Cathedral of Evora began in 1186. Its heavy stone facade is flanked with two cone-topped, battlemented square towers dating from c1200. According to local legend, the fleet of Vasco de Gama had their flags blessed here in 1497. The Historic Centre of Evora was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
