Porta della Carta, Doge's Palace, Venice, Italy
Doge Foscari kneeling before the winged lion of St Mark, on the Porta della Carta, built 1438-42 by Bartolomeo and Giovanni Bon, entrance to the courtyard of the Doge's Palace or Palazzo Ducale, adjoining St Mark's Basilica or the Basilica San Marco, Venice, Italy. The sculptures are replicas, the originals being destroyed by French Napoleonic troops. The gate was the main entrance to the palace, and where important announcements were posted to be read by the citizens of Venice. This was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice, until the Napoleonic occupation in 1797, and is now a museum. The city of Venice is an archipelago of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges, in the Venetian Lagoon. The historical centre of Venice is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
