A statue of Sancho I at the fortress at Sesimbra, Portugal, 2009. Artist: Samuel Magal
A statue of Sancho I (1154-1212) at the fortress at Sesimbra, Portugal, 2009. This Moorish castle was taken from the Moors in 1165 during the Portuguese Reconquista by King Afonso Henriques (with the help of Frank Crusaders). The battlements afford a beautiful panorama over Sesimbra, its harbour and the surrounding countryside.
