'St Teresa of Avila before the Cross', c1621-1663. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582), was a Spanish mystic and saint who reformed the Carmelite order. She is depicted in tears and wearing a crown of thorns. In her hand she holds a crucifix with a figure of Christ and a Madonna lily (Lilium candidum), the symbol of chastity and innocence.
