'St Jerome in a Landscape', c1530-c1550. Artist: Herri met de Bles
'St Jerome in a Landscape', c1530-c1550. Born at Strido in Dalmatia (Croatia), St Jerome (340-420) was one of the four great doctors of the early Christian church. He prepared the first Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Latin, the Vulgate. He kneels before the image of Christ on the cross and his companion lion lies in the foreground and his cardinal's hat hangs on the rock outside his cell.
