'Battle of Fleurus', 16 June 1794 (19th century). Marshal Jean Baptiste Jourdan (1762-1833), mounted on the grey horse, commanding the French army to victory against the Austrians. This was the first battle in which a hot air balloon (Montgolfier) was used by the French as a reconnaissance platform. The balloon is visible in the top right corner of the painting.
