William Blake, English mystic, poet, artist and engraver, 1807. Artist: Thomas Phillips
William Blake, English mystic, poet, artist and engraver, 1807. Although largely ignored by the public of his day, Blake (1770-1845) subsequently came to be regarded as one of the foremost figures of Romanticism. His best-known works include Jerusalem (1804-1820) and The Four Zoas (1795-1804). Trained at the Royal Academy as an engraver, he devised an innovative technique for producing coloured engravings.
