The courtyard of the temple of Isis and Osiris where Sarastro was High Priest, c1816. Artist: Karl Friedrich Schinkel
The courtyard of the temple of Isis and Osiris where Sarastro was High Priest, c1816. Design for an 1816 production of 'Die Zauberflote' ('The Magic Flute') by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). The plot of the opera, originally produced in 1791, has overtones of freemasonry. Some say the character the Queen of the Night represents Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780).
