St Vincent, Spanish Christian martyr, 19th century. A Christian deacon from Zaragoza (Saragossa), Spain, St Vincent was martyred in c304 during the persecutions of Christians under the Emperor Diocletian (245-313). The patron saint of winegrowers, he is shown holding a bunch of grapes and a palm frond, the symbol of martyrdom. Behind him workers are carrying baskets of grapes to a wine press. St Vincent is also the patron saint of Portugal.
