Blue and white meiping vase, Ming dynasty, China, 2nd half of 15th century.
A blue and white meiping vase decorated in the so-called 'windswept' style. The main decoration is of two scholars meeting in a landscape, their attendants on the reverse, one carrying a qin, the other a dragon-headed staff. The two groups are separated by pine and willow trees. The reverse shows a house entrance and swirling cloud, the landscape with clouds at the border, two further borders round the neck, the inner one with four phoenixes amid continuous lotus scrolls and double line borders, the outer with false gadroons, the mouth with four cloud scrolls. A further tall false gadroon border surrounds the bottom of the vase.
