White glazed wine or oil pot with brown splashes, Northern Song dynasty, China, 11th century. A wine/oil pot and cover, the pot has a squat, flattened form with a small mouth 3.2cm in diameter with a slightly raised rim round the mouth. It is decorated under the glaze with six large brown spots. The cover with its plug was fired seperately and has a slight bluish tinge, the separate firing of the cover had become the usual method of firing at the time.
