Brown glazed bottle of leather bag shape, Liao dynasty, China, 11th century.
Brown glazed bottle of leather bag shape, Liao dynasty, China, 11th century. A ceramic, squat, leather bag-shaped bottle, with a short vertical spout. The bottle is covered almost down to the base with a rich, dark, golden brown lead glaze over a white slip. The shape of this bottle shows that it was influenced by classic leather bottles and is one of the most common and easily recognisable Liao shapes. Ceramic camels found in Tang burials sometimes have similar bottles hanging from their saddles.
