Ding type scalloped-edged square saucer with duck amid foliage, Liao dynasty, China, mid 11th century. A square saucer dish with flat bottom and scalloped-edged sides. The centre is moulded with a duck standing with wings three quarters extended, holding a two-flowered peony spray in its beak. In each of the two top corners there is a small moth. The interior base is surrounded by a raised line and raised dot borders. The outward-sloping sides have moulded peony sprays and the whole piece is covered with a white glaze of Ding type but of somewhat greyish white tone.
