St Thomas Aquinas (c1225-1274), Italian philosopher and theologian. Thomas Aquinas was a member of the Dominican order of monks (black friars). He studied under Albertus Magnus at Cologne and went on to write commentaries on Aristotle. Regarded by the Catholic church as its greatest theologian, Aquinas' most famous work is his Summa Theologica which he worked on in the last decade of his life.
