Canton enamel condiment jar and cover, Qing dynasty, China, 18th century.
Canton enamel condiment jar and cover, Qing dynasty, China, 18th century. A covered square Canton enamel condiment container in Queen Anne English silver shape, the lid indented to take a spoon. The lid and body are each divided into four sections and decorated with eight-petalled flowers in red, yellow and blue enamels. The base shows a stylised peony in plum, blue and yellow enamels, while the neck is decorated with a swastika key fret on a yellow ground. The copying of the English silver shape and thinner gilding than on Beijing ware identify this piece as probably having been produced in Canton for export.
