Famille verte plate with broad orange border, Yongzheng period, Qing dynasty, China, 1723-1735.
Famille verte plate with broad orange border, Yongzheng period, Qing dynasty, China, 1723-1735. A plate with rounded sides, the centre decorated in famille verte enamels in Chinese taste with a scholar resting with a qin beside a stream, pine tree and a rock. The cavetto has an orange overglaze, the reverse is plain. Note the use here of overglaze white enamel for the stream. The use of white overglaze enamel was an innovation of circa 1720. Before then the white porcelain, on which the overglaze enamels were placed, was used for the white portions of the design.
