George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823-1900), Scottish Whig politician and scientist, c1880. Campbell was Secretary of State for India from 1868-1874. A geologist, he supported the cataclysmic school of geology rather than uniformitarianism. He was also an opponent of the theories of Darwin.
