Cizhou-type blackware pillow with boy on winged horse, Jin dynasty, China, 12th-13th century.
A Cizhou-type blackware octagonal pillow, its front panel moulded with the scene of a boy riding a winged horse amid foliage. The two adjacent panels are decorated with lotus while the reverse contains a floral spray. It is covered with a black Cizhou-type glaze suffused with brown in places, particularly at the rim. The base is unglazed and shows the rather coarsely-glazed buff body typical of some Cizhou-type blackwares made in several Northern Provinces such as Henan.
