Kraak blue and white klapmuts bowl with pagoda and seascape, late Ming dynasty, China, c1610.
A Kraak blue and white klapmuts bowl with everted rim and foliated border. The centre shows a land and seascape with a pagoda and boats. The sides of the interior are decorated with four medallions of herons amid lotus bordered by tassels. The mouth rim is decorated with scrolling peony. The exterior of the bowl is also decorated in underglaze blue with four medallions depicting boys separated by vases. The exterior of the rim shows birds on floral sprays. 'Kraak' is the Dutch name given to this particular type of blue and white export ware; 'klapmuts' is also Dutch and refers to the shape of the bowl.
