Dehua rust red censer with lion-head masks, late Ming dynasty, China, 1600-1644.
Dehua rust red censer with lion-head masks, late Ming dynasty, China, 1600-1644. A red Dehua censer of circular form with two small lion's head masks one on either side. The lip is sharply everted, the sides are bulging but contract to the footrim, the base reveals the icing sugar-like body. The whole outside and one third of the interior is covered with rust coloured brown caused by complete suffusion of the rich iron oxide glaze.
