'Rice measure' jar, Southern Song-Yuan dynasty, China, 13th-early 14th century.
'Rice measure' jar, Southern Song-Yuan dynasty, China, 13th-early 14th century. Stoneware jar from Ganzhou kiln, Jiangxi province, of a 'rice measure' shape with rolled lip above a waisted unglazed vertical section decorated all round with yellowish white glazed studs spaced out at 1.3cm intervals. The exterior is also unglazed with close parallel incisions simulating basket work. The clay is of light chocolate brown colour, the interior and rolled lip are covered by a rust red iron oxide glaze; a typical Ganzhou kiln ware. The description of this object as a rice measure refers to the shape not the function - it was probably a tea caddy.
