Ding type bowl with deer motif, Jin dynasty, China, late 12th century.
Ding type bowl with deer motif, Jin dynasty, China, late 12th century. A Ding-type bowl from the Jiexiu kiln, Shanxi province. The white glaze covering finely moulded decoration of deer in varying postures in landscapes within six compartments separated by raised lines. In the centre is a swirling flower head surrounded by an unglazed band, characteristic of this kiln, and a glazed band of stylised waves. The footrim is unglazed and the exterior undecorated. Most of the small white glazed bowls from this kiln have geese on them making the deer, seen here, unusual. The unglazed staking ring is characteristic of the second quality pieces from this kiln.
