Ding bowl with phoenixes amid camellia scrolls, Jin dynasty, China, late 12th century.
Ding bowl with phoenixes amid camellia scrolls, Jin dynasty, China, late 12th century. A moulded Ding bowl of classic shape. The small central section is decorated with a spiral six-petalled flower, the cavetto has two long, ribbon-tailed phoenixes amid camelia scrolls. It would have been fired on its unglazed rim allowing the base and footrim to be glazed. The glaze is creamy white and has minute bubbles and, in places, characteristic teardrops.
