Jizhou stoneware bowl with skeleton leaf design, Southern Song dynasty, China, 12th century.
Jizhou stoneware bowl with skeleton leaf design, Southern Song dynasty, China, 12th century. A Jizhou tea bowl with slightly everted rim covered inside and out with a matt brownish black iron oxide glaze with a large yellowish brown skeleton leaf on the interior. The skeleton leaf was considered symbolic of the transience of life itself which in passing leaves memories as a shadow of its former existence.
