'Abbott's Hospital, Guildford', 19th century. George Abbot (1562-1633) became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1611. In 1619 he began building the Hospital of the Blessed Trinity, (now known as Abbot's Hospital). It was built as a home for the elderly - hospital formerly meant shelter or refuge.
