Marie Emile Fayolle, French First World War general, (1926). A general with a background in the artillery, Fayolle (1858-1926) was brought out of retirement when war broke out in 1914. He commanded the French Sixth Army on the right flank of the British during the Somme Offensive in 1916. He then commanded the First Army before being transferred to the Italian Front when French forces were deployed there to assist the Italians in November 1917.
